Welcome to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Children's Room!

Ms. Clara Webber was the first children's librarian of Pomona Public Library. A long time correspondent with Mrs. Laura Ingalls Wilder, she was instrumental in having the Children's Room named in honor of Mrs. Wilder on May 25, 1950. Today, we house the original hand written manuscript for the novel Little Town on the Prairie. Every February, we host the Laura Ingalls Wilder Sociable in honor of Mrs. Wilder's February 7th birthday.

Infant Story Time Trick-Or-Treat!

We had another good time this afternoon with our infant story time group. We had shorter stories than yesterday but these kids were just as cute!

Joke of the day: Why didn't the skeleton cross the road?
Answer: Because he didn't have any guts! ;)

Some "Tunneling Good Fun" at Infant Story Time!

We had a "tunneling good time" at the library this morning. Our very own Ethan turned two on Monday and his mom brought one of his favorite toys to share. It was a hit with the crawling set! Thanks to Ethan and his mom for sharing a great toy. It was a great hit!

Joke of the day: What did our infants do in story time today?
Answer: They tunneled their way out of trouble! ;)

Infant Storytime

Infant story time is every Thursday at 12:15pm. Grandma Sue does an excellent job with the babies. With children's music in the background the babies play with toys and interact with others as well as their Moms (or caregivers.) Several short stories are read and Moms (or caregivers) can interact as well. Stop on in, it's a lot of fun!

Joke of the day: What is the best way to talk to a monster with bad breath?
Answer: By telephone. :)

The Big Read - Our First Story time and Craft

Our first story time and craft of our big read happened today. We didn't have a very big turn out, but we had fun. I'm hoping that as we get into October that this will catch on. The next four Thursday events for children will be staffed by Cal Poly Students. I know they will be putting a lot of time into this and I can't wait to see what they will do.

Today we had stories and talked about how whites treated blacks in the 1930's southern states. One story was about a little African-American girl going to "someplace special ". She got on the bus and had to sit at the back of the bus. She couldn't sit on a bench in the park because it said, "Whites Only". Finally, when she got to her "someplace special ", she could hold her head up high and walk in the front door. She was at the Public Library where the sign out front said, "Everyone Welcome". If you would like to check out this book it is called:

"Goin' Someplace Special" by Patricia Mckissack. It is in the XJ section shelved under the author's last name.

The pictures you see are from the craft. Grandma Sue had beads and bells and foam craft things. I tried to help but ended up telling this child how to do it backwards. Grandma Sue had to straighten it out. I think I'll just stick to handing out the craft supplies and leave it at that. Crafts always have confused me.

Joke of the day: What did the lamp say when the owner turned it off?
Answer: Thanks a watt! :)

Story Time

Story Time at Warrenton

We have new play equipment that we got through a grant called ELF (Early Learning Families). We put toys throughout the children's room and we have special toys to use after story time. The favorite so far is our backpacks filled with learning toys for children to play with their parents or caregivers. This lengthens the time at the library and gives more one on one time with the parent or care giver. We have added another toddler time on Wednesdays and an infant story time on Thursday mornings. We have board books and baby toys for the infants and it is fun to watch this group interact.

So come on in. There is much to see and do. We have board books and picture books to introduce Laura Ingalls Wilder to the very young.

Joke for the day:

Knock-knock
Whose there?
Foe.
Foe who?
Foe me? You shouldn't have!
