Welcome to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Children's Room!

Ms. Clara Webber was the first children's librarian of Pomona Public Library. A long time correspondent with Mrs. Laura Ingalls Wilder, she was instrumental in having the Children's Room named in honor of Mrs. Wilder on May 25, 1950. Today, we house the original hand written manuscript for the novel Little Town on the Prairie. Every February, we host the Laura Ingalls Wilder Sociable in honor of Mrs. Wilder's February 7th birthday.

Pomona Christmas Parade 2009

Good Tuesday, young Pomonans! The parade was terrific on Saturday! It was wet but that sure didn't dampen any spirits. I only saw about 3/4's of the parade because I needed to get to work but what I saw I loved.

I especially appreciated the Village Academy kids being the grand marshalls. They really made a difference in their own lives as well as ours. Imagine being responsible for the President coming to town! Well done Village Academy!

I wanted to post these pictures on Saturday but we were having trouble with the computers. So you have them now! Be sure to check out Metro Pomona and Pomona Arts Colonist for more pictures.

Our schedule this week is:

Tuesday: 11:45am Preschool story time
4-6pm Homework help center

Wednesday: 3:30pm Grandparents and books
4-6pm Homework help center

Thursday: 11:45am Infant story time
4:00pm Holiday craft
4-6pm Homework help center

Joke of the day: Why is lightning so hard to catch?

PPL Staff Setting Up the Tree!

Good day, young Pomonans! Today Ms. Nissa and I bribed the staff with Starbucks coffee and goodies to help us decorate the tree. It worked! We had holiday music playing and a lot of good cheer going around. As always, when the staff get together we have a good time. Today was no different.

All of our holiday books are now on display so come on in and check them out! We have books on how people celebrate these holidays all over the world, so if you are doing a report on that, we are ready for you!

Our homework help center is going strong on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 4:00 to 6:00pm. Their last day before the holiday break is December 17th. They will begin again in January.

Come on in for some great holiday stories. I'll post some of my favorites at a later time.

Joke of the day: What do you get when you cross a snowman with a vampire?
Answer: Frostbite. ;)

Greetings young Pomonans! These pictures were taken to remember our big read this year. We, as a community, read Jack London's "Call of the Wild." City wide we held community events
book talks, crafts, and special programs. Our library staff got "Call of the Wild" t-shirts and we wore them proudly.

The first picture was a nice picture but the second one shows us as we really are! We have great fun as staff and we enjoy working with all of you. I hope you read and enjoyed the book.

Remember this week we are open today and tomorrow, with an early closing tomorrow at 6pm.
We are also open Saturday from 11:30-5:30pm.

Have a great Thanksgiving!

Joke of the day: Why did Pilgrims' pants always fall down?
Answer: Because they wore their belt buckle on their hat! ;)

Good Thursday, young Pomonans! It's been awhile since I've blogged. Writer's block, I think. Remind me to ask David Allen how he does it. :)

This post is about some fun Thanksgiving stories that are a lot of fun. "Turk and Runt" by Lisa Wheeler, is about siblings Turk and Runt. Turk is the beautiful big Turkey who is beautiful but not very smart. Runt, of course, is the runt who is small but very smart. When people start showing up at the farm, Runt knows exactly what is going on and he fears for his brother's life. But, "no one ever listened to Runt". This is a cute story about how Runt saves his brother's life and the hilarity is in how he does it. Check it out!

"This is the Turkey" by Abby Levine is a fun rhyming book. It is about the relatives coming and who prepares the food and especially about what happens to the turkey and mostly about what is really important about the day. It would be a great read-a-loud at a family gathering for this special day. Check it out!

"I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie" by Alison Jackson is hilarious. It is a fun take off of "I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly." This poor lady eats a huge dinner and each page you see her getting bigger and bigger. But instead of ending up with the same fate as the original lady, it ends with a happier and more clever ending. Check it out!

As far as Thanksgiving books go, everyone must include this classic. "Over the River and Through the Wood" by Lydia Maria Child. There are several illustrators to choose from but my favorite one is Iris Van Rynbach. She seems to capture the joy on everyone's face and it is fun to look at the old fashioned pictures. Lydia Maria Francis Child lived from 1802 to 1880. This version captures the 19th century quite well. It also includes the music in the back if you care to sing it. Check it out!

Our schedule for next week is as follows:

Monday: 11/23 Closed
Tuesday: 11/24 11:30am - 7:30pm
Wednesday: 11/25 11:30am to 6:00pm
Thursday: Closed
Friday: Closed
Saturday: 11:30-5:30pm

Note our early closing on Wednesday and that we are open regular hours on Saturday.

Have a great weekend and a great week before Thanksgiving!

Joke of the day: Why was the turkey the drummer in the band?
Answer: Because he had the drumsticks. ;)

Veteran's Day

Just a reminder to all of you young Pomonans that we will be closed tomorrow in honor of Veteran's Day. Take time to think of Pomona's veterans who are serving overseas to defend our country.

Thank you Pomona Veterans!

Joke of the day: How do you get a book to come to the telephone?
Answer: You page it. ;)

More Homework Assistance Center Photos

Hello young Pomonans! Here are more pictures of the party last week. You all look like you've had a wonderful time and you did!

I was impressed with the number of you that turned out. It shows how successful our Homework Center really is.

The other thing I was impressed with is how well Daniel and his volunteers cleaned up after you all. When I came in Friday morning there was absolutely no evidence that you all had been here. Wow!

We have more exiting events to come. Stay tuned!

Joke of the day: Why did the sun get straight A's?
Answer: Because it was very bright. :)

Homework Assistance Center Halloween Party

Wow! Did we ever have a party yesterday afternoon. Our Homework Assistance Center went all out to have a great party for everyone. Daniel, our Americorps Promise Fellow from Cal Poly Pomona, did an outstanding job putting this together. The Homework Center worked with kids on their homework from 4-5pm and then had this great party out on the patio from 5-6pm. A GREAT time was had by all. The volunteers who worked with Daniel worked hard at setting up, blowing up balloons, decorating, etc.

Daniel is really good at encouraging businesses to donate what they can to the center and he had some really great decorations that were donated from the community. He found these two big awesome pinatas that were full to the brim. One child was hitting the pinata so hard that the rest of us gave him plenty of space!

The party was a huge success and the credit goes to Daniel and his volunteers. We at the library are so lucky to have such talented students volunteer their time here. College students are busy anyway and to have them give us so much of their time is really great.

If you have not been to our Homework Assistance Center yet, please come in and experience it for yourselves. You'll meet some great college students and get your homework done at the same time.

Our Homework Assistance Center hours are: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 4:00-6:00pm. See you here!

Joke of the day: What do witches use in their hair?
Answer: Scare-spray. ;)
