Welcome to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Children's Room!

Ms. Clara Webber was the first children's librarian of Pomona Public Library. A long time correspondent with Mrs. Laura Ingalls Wilder, she was instrumental in having the Children's Room named in honor of Mrs. Wilder on May 25, 1950. Today, we house the original hand written manuscript for the novel Little Town on the Prairie. Every February, we host the Laura Ingalls Wilder Sociable in honor of Mrs. Wilder's February 7th birthday.

My Dream Vacation

I go on vacation next week. This is my dream vacation because a vacation like this is only in my dreams. The truth is I have a lot of vacation hours and I need to lower them. Am I going anywhere? Well, maybe to Upland Public Library, or maybe I'll take Flat Stanley to the beach...

All our programs will be going strong. I will be coming in for the Tuesday story time. (How could I possibly miss the April 1st story time? I pull all the silly stories I can get my hands on.) My favorite is "The Twist Mouth Family". I bet you can't guess what is silly about that family!

Toddler time and Infant story time will be Wednesday and Thursday at 10:00am. Ms. Nissa and Grandma Sue do a GREAT job with these groups.

Don't forget our homework center. Tuesday and Thursday the hours are 4:00pm-6:00pm. and Wednesday 3:00pm-5:00pm. This is for students in grades 3 through 6.

Grandparents and Books is Wednesday from 3:30-4:30pm. Grandma Jean comes in especially for this and does an excellent job. She even lets you practice your reading if you want too.

So have a great week. If you have suggestions of what you do on your vacations please leave a comment. I can use all the help I can get!

In case you missed it last week...

Yours truly (Ms. Nissa) was quoted in an article in the Daily Bulletin last week. You can read it here: "Seeing How Pomona Operates"

That was our second visit from a local Pomona school and we're really excited for the next two schools to come. I might even have my tour memorized by then! :-D

Joke of the day:
Knock, Knock! Who's there? Catsup. Catsup who? Catsup a tree and she won't come down! :-D

New books!!

New books!!

OK! All right, already! It came in finally. For those of you who have been waiting: Twilight by Stephanie Meyer is in. I hope you like it because just reading the cover jacket scares the socks off of me. Why you like to be scared to death is beyond me, I find life itself frightening...

We have two copies, one being on the hold shelf, and the one I'm looking at now is up for grabs. Usually when a book is popular I grab a copy and read it before I let it go, but I'll pass on this one. :)

We have many more new books in for teens so make sure you stop by the YA section and look for yourself. We are also beefing up the non-fiction YA section so check that out while you're at it. It may come in handy for school reports and it will save you a trip to the adult room.

Some of the new non-fiction books are on these subjects:

Energy Alternatives
Forensic Science
The Birth of Mathematics
The Death Penalty
Biomedical Ethics
Illegal Immigration

... just to name a few. So come on in and check it out and come by and say hey to us as well. Our desk is in the children's room but we keep our eye out for teens as well. We know how special you are and we love seeing all of the great teens in Pomona. Keep up the good work!

Sneeze!

Hey! I've missed you all! I've been home with a rather nasty cold. You know, sneezing, blowing your nose, talking like a frog ...I'm afraid I don't make a good patient. I hate not going into work. Television gets boring and besides you have to deal with those comercials where a green talking mucus man gets blown up. Who needs that?

I've been on the computer a lot. I think I've read every article on the Daily Bulletin.com. I read other blogs about five times a day, try not to call my co-workers and ask "what have I missed?"

I am reading "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee which is our next Big Read in Pomona. It's quite good in case you haven't read it. For an adult book, that is.

Help me out here folks. Leave a comment and tell me what you do when you stay home sick. I'm all tapped out. Oh, and by the way, the next time you are in the library, try not to sneeze on the librarian. :)

Have a great weekend!

Have a great weekend!

This looks like my cat Gilbert. He will be 15 years old tomorrow. Gilbert used to be an animal hospital blood donor but was rescued by a good friend of mine.

Have a great weekend and while you are doing your weekend stuff, think about coming into the Library next week.

Monday is St. Patrick's Day so remember to wear green unless you actually enjoy being pinched. I don't. I have a full proof green button in my desk at work that usually saves me each year when I forget to wear green!

Rumor has it that PUSD has a "pupil free day" (gotta love that term), on Tuesday, so come into the library for reading, homework help, or to drive us crazy. We actually enjoy that!

Wednesday we will have a spring craft so Grandma Sue will be leading this by showing you how to make bunny faces out of cotton balls. It's actually quite cute. (Grandma Sue has a crafty mind....)

For the young ones, story time is on Tues. 10:15am, Wed. at 10:00am, and Thursday at 10:00am.

Have a great weekend and remember to be kind to humans and animals. You'll feel good if you do.

Get off my homework!

Get off my homework!

We all have many reasons not to do homework. The cat sat on it. The dog ate it. The wind picked it up and it flew on the roof. (I actually saw that happen once.) My best friend turned it in as their own...My Grandma died again...

No more excuses! Our new homework center is taking off nicely. Cal Poly Pomona students are here to help you. The days and hours are:

Tuesday and Thursday: 4:00-6:00pm
Wednesday: 3:00-5:00pm

Be there and be fair!

Joke for the day: Why did the math book have to go to a psychiatrist?
Answer: Because it was full of problems!

March Spring Craft

Do you like to make things? Join Grandma Sue on Wednesday March 19, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. We will be making a Bunny Rabbit. It's really soft, and you can hang it in your window or on the fridge, or on the wall in you room. All of our crafts are free so remember the date and I'll see you then.

I read kids' books

I read kids' books
Originally uploaded by Inkygirl
It's true. I read children's books all the time. And why shouldn't I? Children's authors have the skill to write in a way that kids can relate to. Some of the most profound books are children's books. Once you've read and loved a book as a child, you'll never forget it.

When I was in third grade, my teacher read us the Little House on the Prairie books. I keenly remember sitting spellbound when she read that a prairie fire was coming straight for the little house. I could actually see it in my minds eye. I have never forgotten that and I never will.

Lucky for me I now work in the Laura Ingalls Wilder room at the Pomona Public Library. Come in and see the original manuscript of "Little Town on the Prairie." Sometimes I think that our original manuscript is the best kept secret in Pomona. However, in about three weeks we will appear in David Allen's blog, Pomona A-Z. (March 30th to be exact.) We are the letter "L" and David does a great job of sharing our room with the community.

So come on in to the children's room. If you are an adult and want to read a children's book, we'll never tell. If you are a child and want to read a children's book, we'll tell the world!

I would like to take this opportunity to share with you that I
put this picture into this blog all by myself. Thank you, thank
you. Yes, this computer challenged librarian managed to do something that most of you all do everyday. Maybe old cats can learn new tricks. :)
