Welcome to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Children's Room!

Ms. Clara Webber was the first children's librarian of Pomona Public Library. A long time correspondent with Mrs. Laura Ingalls Wilder, she was instrumental in having the Children's Room named in honor of Mrs. Wilder on May 25, 1950. Today, we house the original hand written manuscript for the novel Little Town on the Prairie. Every February, we host the Laura Ingalls Wilder Sociable in honor of Mrs. Wilder's February 7th birthday.

Saying Goodbye to Grandma Jean

Dear Young Pomonans,

Our favorite Grandma Jean Roman must resign as our resident Grandma. She has had heath problems and cannot come in to read anymore.

Grandma Jean has spent the last 20 years reading on Wednesday afternoons to our children. She began with other grandparents in a program we started called Grandparents and Books. We had a group of about 15 readers who would rotate reading. Then after about five years only two grandparents were left: Grandma Flo and Grandma Jean. For the last three or four years it has just been Grandma Jean.

Grandma Jean will be missed by all of us. Because of her our Grandparents and Books program lasted twenty years.

Much love to Grandma Jean!

Happy Birthday, Grandma Jean!

Good Thursday, young Pomonans! Yesterday we had the privilege of celebrating Grandma Jean's 85th birthday! Happy birthday Grandma Jean! Grandma Jean has been with us since we introduced the Grandparents and Books program back in 1992. She has been reading with us for eighteen years!

She has been a very loyal volunteer who loves to read to children. Thank you for your years of service and for your commitment to the Pomona Public Library.

We love you Grandma Jean!!

Joke of the day: How did Jack (of the Jack and the Beanstalk fame) know how much his cow was worth?
Answer: He used a cowculator! ;)

Our Craft for the First Big Read

Good Wednesday young Pomonans! This is a picture of our craft for tomorrow. It doesn't yet have the three bells on it, so picture bells hanging and blowing in the wind. (That reminds me of a song...)

Remember the time tomorrow: 3:00-4:00pm.

Grandma Jean will be here today from 3:30-4:30pm. The homework center is open today and tomorrow from 4:00-6:00pm.

See you here!

Joke of the day: Why do cows have bells?
Answer: Because their horns don't work. :)

Pomona Public Library's Beloved Grandma Jean

Jean Roman is the Pomona Public Library's beloved Grandma Jean. For the past fifteen years, Grandma Jean has been faithfully reading to our children every Wednesday afternoon from 3:30-4:30pm. She began when our Friends of the Library started the Grandparents and Books program back in 1993. Since then the Friends have moved into many other programs but our Grandma Jean stayed on.

We pull books for her to read to the children. But Grandma Jean took it to another level when she started letting the children practice their reading by letting them read aloud to the others at the table. She is always so patient and kind with everyone that we always look forward to her cheerful self! She has had "groupies" where children would come in and ask for Grandma Jean and be delighted when she walked in.

Kudos to you, Grandma Jean, from the community of Pomona. Your faithfulness and loyalty to our children make you a gem with us. We look forward to your continued and valued service.

For those of you who want to see Grandma Jean, her last session is next Wednesday, June 18th at 3:30pm. She will begin again in September.
