Welcome to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Children's Room!

Ms. Clara Webber was the first children's librarian of Pomona Public Library. A long time correspondent with Mrs. Laura Ingalls Wilder, she was instrumental in having the Children's Room named in honor of Mrs. Wilder on May 25, 1950. Today, we house the original hand written manuscript for the novel Little Town on the Prairie. Every February, we host the Laura Ingalls Wilder Sociable in honor of Mrs. Wilder's February 7th birthday.

Goddess of Pomona

Good Tuesday young Pomonans! Today I thought I would bring the Goddess of Pomona to your attention. We have housed the Goddess here at the library from 1889 to the present which is 120 years! This Goddess is an imitation of a goddess made it Italy. The original can be found in Ufizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. It cost $917.40 to ship it from Italy. Today that would be about $20,000.00!

The Goddess statue is placed on a marble base, which sits on top of a block of granite. It has been estimated that the statue and base together weigh between 600-700 pounds. Since first coming to Pomona in 1889, the statue has been "bathed" - cleaned - just three times. In 1965, 1982, and 1987. It was placed in its glassed case in 1989.

I took a picture of the Goddess' feet on purpose. You may not be able to tell from the picture but her feet are two different sizes and she has on two different sandals. It you can't see it clearly come on in and see it for yourself!

We are proud to house the Goddess for the City of Pomona. She stands tall and proud and watches over us all in the beautiful City of Pomona.

Joke of the day: Why should you tiptoe past the medicine cabinet?
Answer: So you won't wake the sleeping pills. :)

That's right, she does. I think I remember seeing a different sandal on the one that's hidden, but I don't really remember since it's been awhile since I came in and took a look at her.

I would, but I'm so tired by the time the weekend rolls around that I don't feel like going anywhere. I'm doing five-day weeks this semester. x-x;
