Welcome to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Children's Room!

Ms. Clara Webber was the first children's librarian of Pomona Public Library. A long time correspondent with Mrs. Laura Ingalls Wilder, she was instrumental in having the Children's Room named in honor of Mrs. Wilder on May 25, 1950. Today, we house the original hand written manuscript for the novel Little Town on the Prairie. Every February, we host the Laura Ingalls Wilder Sociable in honor of Mrs. Wilder's February 7th birthday.

Laura

This is Laura Ingalls wilder at age 18. We named our children's room for her on May 25, 1950. It is her birthday we are celebrating this Saturday.

To all you computer savvy young people: It has taken me a day and a half to figure out how to post this. If you feel sorry for this computer-challenged Librarian, please come by and slow talk me through the process. At this point I am highly confused. Have mercy.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Sociable

This morning I was cleaning out the display cases that house the Laura Ingalls Wilder mementos. I took a moment while I was dusting to really look at these treasures. They are what we have left of the past. We have dolls that are dressed in prairie attire, little models of the Ingalls family, and first edition copies of the Little House books that are actually signed by Laura. We even have twisted hay from South Dakota on display. Not to mention the original manuscript that Laura hand wrote "Little Town on the Prairie." What was the world like when Laura was alive?

Picture this: no electricity: this means no lights, televisions, computers and (horrors) no wii games.
No indoor plumbing: yes you had to go outside to get water to wash up, bathe and (horrors) use the outhouse. It took so much longer to do things. Laura's Ma assigned a task for every day:

"Wash on Monday,
Iron on Tuesday,
Mend on Wednesday,
Churn on Thursday,
Clean on Friday,
Bake on Saturday,
Rest on Sunday."

Come on over to the Pomona Public Library THIS Saturday at 1:00pm (do your baking in the morning) and enjoy music from the past. Craig Newton will perform "How the West was Sung" and Journeys to the Past will tell stories and re-enact the past before your very eyes! Then, for all you crafty people, we will have a great craft with Grandma Sue. (Read her post for more information.) It's always a lot of fun and, yes, there will be food.

See you all Saturday!

New Computers in the Children's Room!

Hey all you computer savvy young people - there are brand new computers in the children's room.
The headphones now work on ALL computers! They take up half the space of those poor old dinosaurs. We had a quiet moment as they were pushed out and then we ... PLAYED ON THE NEW ONES! Yes, my friends, we adults still can play. But only because we are around you to help us remember. Never forget you are very important to us. So come in and check them out! Well, you can't actually check them out even if you have a library card, but you know what I mean.

I see that a lot of you are working on science projects. We have a whole section of books dedicated to science projects. Make sure you pick a project that you are interested in. There is science in nearly everything and I think you might be surprised at the variety of books we have on the subject. There is science in music and even bubbles. Yes, bubbles. We have a book that shows you how to make giant bubbles. And the list goes on and on...

We have five days left before our Laura Ingalls Wilder Sociable. Remember to mark your calendars for Saturday, February 2nd from 1:00-4:00pm.

See you there!!

Saturday, January 26, 2008

Grandma Sue here. I want to give you some more info about the craft we are doing on Saturday, February 2, 2008. We are going to color, cut out, and paste together a one room school house. Just like the one Laura Ingalls Wilder went to and taught at. It will be fun to see what everyone thinks a school house should look like.

Come one, come all, babies ages o to 18 months. Help teach mommy to play, read, and sing songs to you. Grandma Sue loves babies. You're all so cute.

Answer: They make faces all day!

We all love a good school joke:

Answer: The Cheetah!

And how about a nice tongue twister?
-The doctoring doctor doctors the doctor
the way the doctoring doctor
wants to doctor the doctor
Not the way the doctored doctor
wants to be doctored.
