Welcome to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Children's Room!

Ms. Clara Webber was the first children's librarian of Pomona Public Library. A long time correspondent with Mrs. Laura Ingalls Wilder, she was instrumental in having the Children's Room named in honor of Mrs. Wilder on May 25, 1950. Today, we house the original hand written manuscript for the novel Little Town on the Prairie. Every February, we host the Laura Ingalls Wilder Sociable in honor of Mrs. Wilder's February 7th birthday.

Mrs. Nelson's Library Services

Great Saturday, young Pomonans! One of the best kept secrets in Pomona is that we have our very own (well, okay, we don't own it, I'm just saying..) book bindery here in Pomona!! That's right, a book bindery. How cool is that??

Mrs. Nelson's Library Services is located on Orange Grove in north Pomona. They bind books for different libraries in Southern California. When they get large orders and need more help, I get to go and help process books. By processing I mean getting the books in order, putting on call numbers, mylar jackets, security tape, etc. Pretty quickly you find out what you're good at and what you're not so good at. I can put books in order, shelve according to what school they are going to, and putting on security tape. Anything else is beyond me. That's why there are several of us that are good at doing different things!

Mrs. Nelson's son Patrick Nelson runs the bindery. They have full time staff that work year round binding books. All of them are so very nice to us that come in several times a year. I know first names but I wish I knew their full names so I could give full credit to them here. They are so patient with us and explain things in a way that doesn't make you feel dumb.

The pictures here are of the different machines in the bindery. I missed out on the tour so I don't know what each machine does exactly. But my favorite is the large sewing machine.

The last picture is the large table that we stand around when processing books. The books get passed from one station to the next until the book is ready to be shipped out to the library.

As most of you probably know, Mrs. Nelson has a toy and book shop in La Verne. I have been tempted many times to spend my entire pay check there. It is a wonderful store for children who love books and toys!

If you want to visit them, their address is:

Mrs. Nelson's Toy and Book Shop
1030 Bonita Ave.
La Verne, CA 91750

Joke of the day: What did the math book say to the history book?
Answer: Boy, do I have problems! ;)

What a wonderful blog. I too work with Patrick Nelson. My name is Toni Francis and I work as one of the sales rep and have been with Mrs. Nelson's Library Services now for over a year. I love the way everyone in the bindery works together. You especially always are warm and friendly. Smiles and hugs to you and all. I would love to get together with you sometime and plan a fun library event.
