Welcome to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Children's Room!

Ms. Clara Webber was the first children's librarian of Pomona Public Library. A long time correspondent with Mrs. Laura Ingalls Wilder, she was instrumental in having the Children's Room named in honor of Mrs. Wilder on May 25, 1950. Today, we house the original hand written manuscript for the novel Little Town on the Prairie. Every February, we host the Laura Ingalls Wilder Sociable in honor of Mrs. Wilder's February 7th birthday.

Dewey Readmore Books

Good morning young Pomonans! Our favorite cat is back in the library! Dewey Readmore Books lived at the Spencer Public library in Iowa for many years and just last year an adult book came out about his story. The author, Vicki Myron, was the Library Director at Spencer P. L. and was the one to find this beautiful kitten put into the book drop on a very cold winter day. He survived and the town of Spencer, Iowa adopted this kitten.

I was so moved by this story that I flew to Spencer Iowa last year to meet the author and have the Library's copy of her book (as well as my own) signed. It was a wonderful experience and I wrote of my experiences on this blog in late October 2008.

Now this month Vicki has published: "There's a Cat In the Library" by Vicki Myron with Bret Witter; Little, Brown & co. 2009.

This is the first of several anticipated Children's book about Dewey. The illustrations on this book is lovely and the cartoon depicted Dewey is just adorable. The cover will definitely attract young readers to Dewey's special story. I will let you know when our copy comes in.

Remember, our Homework Assistance Center opens October 6th from 4:00-6:00pm

Joke of the day: Attention young Pomonans!! Will you please go read Dewey's new book?
Young Pomonans: Dewey have to???
(Ms. Lois: Yes! You'll love it!!!)

Johnny Appleseed

Johnny Appleseed

I've always liked the story of Johnny Appleseed. His real name was John Chapman and he traveled around the country giving away apple seeds.

I was cruising around Flickr and found this picture that someone had taken. I really like this picture because it seems to depict the character of Johnny himself. It is said that when he traveled all around, he camped out and used his cooking pot for a hat. I have had my story time kids come to story time with a pot on their heads. Preschoolers wearing a pot on their heads is a delightful sight! They have no idea why they are doing it but it is fun. It gives me a way to tell preschoolers who and what Johnny did. His birthday is coming up this Saturday so eat an apple or give away apple seeds in his honor!

The other part of Johnny Appleseed that I like is that he is said to be a friend to animals. One story I read tells of a time that when he was camping out he saw a mosquito fly into his campfire and die. He immediately put out his fire because he didn't want any creature to die for his comfort. What a guy!

A fun thing to do this weekend would be to bake an apple pie and tell your friends and family about Johnny Appleseed.

Joke of the day: What mountain would Johnny Appleseed be most likely to climb?
Answer: APPLE-ACHIA!! ;)

Pomona Public Library at the Los Angeles County Fair

Greetings young Pomonans! Today is the City of Pomona day at the Los Angeles County Fair. The Library Staff has ridden in this parade for the last 6 years. Actually, the first year we marched and pushed our book carts! It was a hoot! We did routines with them and even when we just twirled them around, the crowd cheered us on. The problem was that pushing them around the fair grounds was really hard on them and some wheels fell off! Since then our Library Director hasn't let us use them. :( The next couple of years we just walked the parade and then about three years ago we started to ride in the back of a City of Pomona truck. It is great fun each year. A lot of the times we ride in front of or behind the Pomona police. Pictured here are members of the Claremont police riding at the L.A. County Fair.

Unfortunately, since we have fewer employees at the Library, I must stay behind this year and work the Children' s desk. So come on in young Pomonans! I'm here for you. :)

Joke of the day: What was the spider charged with by the bug police?
Answer: Assault with a lethal webbin! ;)
