Welcome to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Children's Room!

Ms. Clara Webber was the first children's librarian of Pomona Public Library. A long time correspondent with Mrs. Laura Ingalls Wilder, she was instrumental in having the Children's Room named in honor of Mrs. Wilder on May 25, 1950. Today, we house the original hand written manuscript for the novel Little Town on the Prairie. Every February, we host the Laura Ingalls Wilder Sociable in honor of Mrs. Wilder's February 7th birthday.

Mark Your Calendars - February 6, 2010 1-3pm

Our Laura Ingalls Wilder Gingerbread Sociable is coming in two weeks! This is our 44th annual sociable that we have been having! In six years we will have done this every year for 50 years!

This year we are having Judith Helton perform. She dresses like Laura would have dressed and she tells Laura's stories. Judith knew Clara Webber who was the first Children's librarian here at the Pomona Public Library. Ms. Webber was a fan of Laura's and corresponded with her and is the one responsible for naming our children's section The Laura Ingalls Wilder Room.

Also some good news is that our own Pomona Bakery will be making the Gingerbread this year. If you haven't been there yet their address is: 200 E. First St. Pomona, CA (909) 629-7680.

Come on in to the Sociable and step back in time for a really good time!

See you here!

Joke of the day: Why was the broom late?
Answer: It over-swept! ;)

Laura Ingalls Wilder Gingerbread Sociable Coming Soon!

Good Wednesday, young Pomonans! Our 44th annual Laura Ingalls Wilder Gingerbread Sociable is coming up on February 6, 2010. Each year we celebrate Laura's birthday on the first Saturday of February. Her actual birthday is February 7, 1867. Yes, she lived a long time ago and she is still a favorite children's author. We at the Pomona Public Library named our children's room in honor of her.

This picture I posted is one of my favorites. The young girl in the white coat is Melissa Sue Anderson and she played the part of Mary (Laura's sister) in the television version of the children's books "Little House on the Prairie." She came here to Pomona to promote the television series and we loved having her because of our connection to Laura.

In anicipation of our event we will be holding "stories with Laura" each Wednesday at 5:00pm in the children's room. We will be singing one 0f the songs that were popular in Laura's day and we will be reading several stories. These sessions will be like a comercial to advertise our big event.

So join us every Wednesday at 5:00pm and be sure to mark your calendars for February 6, 2010 from 1:00-3:00pm.

See you here!

Joke of the day: Do you turn on your computer with your right or your left hand?
Answer: My right hand!
Amazing! Most people use the on switch! ;)

Big Read Banners

Good Saturday, young Pomonans! We now house two of the banners that were made for our big read last fall.

The large banner titled "Buck's Journey" was made by teens at the Kennedy Teen Center which is located at 1150 Fairplex in Pomona. The smaller banner was made at La Casita Teen Center which is located at 449 E. Arrow Hwy. in Pomona.

Good job teens!

Joke of the day: Why does a stork stand on one leg?
Answer: Because it would fall over if it lifted the other one. ;)
