Pomona High band seeks donation of instruments

Pomona High band seeks donation of instruments


The Pomona High School Marching Band is in need of help.
During the last two years, the band has grown and now lacks enough musical instruments for its members.
The band and band director Alison Fisher are asking for donations of "gently used" musical instruments.
"Some school marching bands like the parade competitions," Fisher said in a statement.
"Here at Pomona High we're into field competition, and that's been drawing more students to our program. Also, the middle schools have been sending us more and more talented musicians. Now that our band program is rebuilding, our challenge is to make sure everyone has the instruments they need."
In addition to instruments, the band program will accept financial donations. The financial contributions will help cover costs connected with participating in competitions, transportation and repairing instruments, the statement said.

An Afternoon With Buster Balloon

As you can see, we had a great time with Buster Balloon yesterday. He made incredible balloon figures and had children laughing out loud. He put himself in a straight jacket and still made balloon figures with one hand!

Our recreation department was here and made snow cones which was a big hit with all of you. It was a great afternoon and a perfect way to end our Summer Reading Program. Our next big event is the Big Read. All of Pomona will be reading "Call of the Wild". We will be having wildlife programs and crafts.

Have a great rest of the summer. I will be on vacation for the next two weeks but I'll be back in time before school starts.

Our homework help center will re-open in September.

Our Current "Resident Teens"

Anais, Kelly and Vivian have been a great help with our Summer Reading Program this year. If it weren't for these girls we couldn't have functioned as well. They helped pass out prizes to our readers and also were part of our Reading Buddy's program. It's a lot of fun for me to have teens around! Let's here it for Anais, Kelly and Vivian! Hooray!!!

Another joke of the day: What happened when the knife and spoon took a hike?
Answer: They came upon a fork in the road! ;)

Juggling With Mr. Ed

Good Friday, young Pomonans! We had a great time with Mr. Ed yesterday. A lot of you caught on really fast. I don't know how many years in a row that I've taken Mr. Ed's class and I can only juggle scarves not the beanbags!

We started out with the feathers and many of you went right to the beanbags. Not me. Scarves are my speed!

Don't forget that the last day to turn in your reading hours is tomorrow 8/8/09 by 5:15pm. Our end of the reading program party is Wednesday 8/12/09 at 3:30pm. Buster Balloon will be here again and we can't wait!

Those of you who won "Reader of the Week" can take home your pictures and interviews at that time.

We had a really great summer and in some ways it's hard to see it end.

Pomona Public Library's Talent Show - August 5, 2009

We had a great time at our talent show yesterday. Pomona kids have tons of talent! We had a magician do tricks and in the darker pictures we had dancing. Luis played the keyboard, Lucy read some original poems that she wrote and a good time was had by all.

We have been so busy that I haven't had time to blog! It's good to get back to it.

This coming Saturday is the last day to turn in your reading hours. Be sure to come in by then so you can get your prizes. Remember if you read 25 hours you get a free pool pass to either Ganesha or Washington Park pools! That alone is worth all the hours reading (besides it's fun!)

Next Wednesday, August 12, 2009 is our Summer Reading Program Party. You don't want to miss this. We are having Buster Balloon return to do his balloon program again. Be here!

Our Fabulous Puppet Show With Swazzle

Hello young Pomonans! Oh my goodness, we had such a great time with Swazzle yesterday. I am sorry that the pictures are so dark but he did a light show!! We turned off the overhead lights and he used shadow puppets as well as puppets themselves lit up with lights. Our reading program theme is: "be creative @ your library" and Swazzle was very creative. It really was impressive! For those of you who were there, you know how incredible it was. In some of the better lighted pictures, you can see how kids were participating and getting totally obsorbed with this show. This whole summer we have had great programs and the response of the children was amazing. It is so great to be a part of Pomona!!

Today is the last day of our reading buddies. We have had 135 children read with 29 high school and college mentors! A mentor and a student would sit together in our story hour room and practice reading for 30 minutes. It is such a great program and is very rewarding to both student and mentor. We are so proud of our mentors (who volunteered their time) that we are having a pizza party for them today. Hooray for the Reading Buddies Program!!

Remember there is just one more week to be able to turn in your reading hours. The following week we will have our talent show and the week after that we have our end of the reading program party with Buster Balloon. If you were here last year you KNOW how incredible Buster is. He makes these intricate balloon figures and for the finale he blows up this huge "whoopie cushion" and gets INSIDE it!!

So come on in and experience the fun for yourselves. Thanks to all of you who have come in and made this reading program the best it can be. You are wonderful!!

Craft Tuesday 11/28/09

The picture right above is a sample of the craft we did today. The other pictures are the masks made by our children. We were being very creative at our library!

We really had a good time with this today. I announced (as I always do) that I would be taking pictures and putting it on our blog (which is on the internet.) I always ask the parents permission because some have serious objections to having a picture of their child on the internet. I totally understand that and if anyone has any objections I won't take their picture. Today we had all sorts of interest and I took pictures of almost everyone. They were all so good and most of the kids wore their masks and some wanted only a picture of there mask. It was interesting that today none of the parents objected but several of the children themselves objected. I believe in honoring everyone's request.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is our Puppet show with Swazzle. We start at 3:3opm and after the show we will have our raffle and honoring our readers of the week with prizes.
