2013 Summer Reading Program - Reading Is So Delicious!

Our 2013 Summer Reading Program begins Monday June 3rd.  Come in and sign up and begin reading.  We give out prizes every 5 hours, 10 hours, 15 hours and 20 hours.  We will have our Wednesday programs every Wednesday June 5 through July 10.  More info to come!!!!

First Craft of the Summer: Rain Stick

Good Wednesday, young Pomonans! We made rain sticks today. You could decorate them the way you wanted and take them home to make it sound like rain. This time of year we need to remember what that sounds like!

Summer Reading Program Sign-Ups Begin Monday

Good Tuesday, Young Pomonans! Our Summer Reading Program sign-ups begin Monday, June 20, 2011 from 12:00pm-7:00pm. Anytime the library is open next week you can come in and sign up, pick out your books and begin reading!!

If you cannot read yet, a parent or sibling can read to you and you get a prize after reading five books, then 10, then 15, and then 20.

If you CAN read, you count the hours you have read. We give out prizes after 5, 10, 15, 20 hours of reading.

If you are a teen, you read for raffle tickets. After you read five books, you get one raffle ticket. After 10 books, you get two raffle tickets. I won't say what we are raffling off, but you are going to WANT it!!!

If you need more information, please come in to the library and ask. That is what we are here for!!

Good day, young Pomonans! The Summer Reading Program is coming soon! Our theme this year is "One World, Many Stories." Sign ups begin June 20, 2011 and the first day to turn in hours is June 27th.

Our Reading Buddies Program sign ups begin June 20th with the actual program beginning June 27th. This program is where we pair up an elementary student with a high school or college student to practice reading. This is a GREAT program because the younger children like the attention of the older students and the older students like to help the younger ones.

Stop in to the library for applications for the buddy program and for more detailed information about both programs.

Good Monday, young Pomonans! This is the first Monday we have been open in over a year and it's good to be back. Sadly, we will be closed Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

This Wednesday, July 14th is a special program with bubbles. Bubble Mania will be showing different and all kinds of bubbles. You might end up INSIDE one! Since our theme this year is: Make a Splash @ Your Library, we thought a bubble program would be appropriate.

Swazzle Puppet Show

Great Wednesday, young Pomonans! We had a splendid time with Swazzle. I told you they were good! Swazzle did a circus program this year and we enjoyed it very much.

Next week is Bubble Mania. Come and get inside a real bubble!

Attention all you adults out there: Today was also the beginning of the Adult Reading Program. This is the third year we have offered this and you actually get prizes as well. Please come in for the details at the adult reference desk.

To all you young Pomonans: It was great to see you all today! So far 99 children signed up today as did 16 teens. Remember to read your five hours this week and come in to pick up your prizes next week!

Wednesday Programs July 7 - August 11 / Party August 18, 2010

Good Saturday young Pomonans! Our Wednesday programs will start a week from this Wednesday. We have some great shows lined up and here is what they are:

All programs are from 3:30-4:30pm.

Wednesday July 7: Puppet Show by Swazzle. We had Swazzle last year and this is a full fledged professional puppet show. They make their own puppets and do this work full time. They even added a segment of shadow puppets. After the show he shows you inside the puppet theater and tells you how the puppet are made! Don't miss this!

Wednesday July 14: Bubble Show with Bubblemania. This is our first time having Bubblemania but we've heard great things. He makes bubbles of all sizes and may even include you! Don't miss this!

Wednesday July 21: Magician Abbit the Average. (Pictured above.) This is one of my all time favorite shows. Jeff Abbit has become a good friend over the years. I love how he interacts with children and his sense of humor is hysterical. He is a professional magician and juggler and all around good guy. You don't even want to miss this!

Wednesday July 28: Wildlife Wonders was with us last year. They bring amazing wild animals. Last year they brought a baby alligator. He was awesome! I remember hearing a lot of ooohs and ahhhs and we learned a lot about each animal. Don't miss this!

August 4: Story teller Michael McCarty. This is Michael's first apperance here at PPL. I saw him perform at a performers showcase I attended. Michael memorizes his stories and has great eye contact with the audience. He is animated and includes children in his performance. Don't miss this!

August 11: The children of Pomona will perform in this Puppet Readers Theater. Sign up now at the Childrens desk if you want to be a part of this group. This group is like acting but you get to read your part from a script that you hold. You will be given several scripts and we will choose who will read what part. When you have been given your parts, you will make a puppet of each character. I have been given a puppet theater and you all will perform with your puppets in this theater. It is going to be great fun! Don't miss out on this opportunity to perform!

August 18th will be our party for all who read at least five hours in the reading program. This year we will have musician Craig Newton perform and play a bunch of different instruments. Craig has been here several times and we always have a great time. Some of us have been known to start dancing... You don't want to miss this!

We have a wonderful summer planned for all of you. We are the best deal in town because everything is free - even the air conditioning! Bring your friends and family and join us for a great summer! See you here at the amazing Pomona Public Library!!!

Summer Reading Program and Reading Buddies 2010

It's almost here, young Pomonans! These are pictures of our prizes for the Summer Reading Program this year. The top two pictures are prizes for the children and the bottom two are pictures of the prizes for teens. As usual we have great prizes! Come on in and see the display and then Tuesday come to sign up for the Reading Program and for the Reading Buddies Program. Our Children's Reading Program is for children ages 0-12 and teens ages 13-17. The children's theme is: Make a Splash @ your library and the teens theme is: Make Waves @ your library. So come in and sign up!

As you remember, we keep track of the hours you read. We give you a reading log that easily tracks your time. After reading five hours, bring it in and we give you some prizes. We give prizes out for five, ten, fifteen, and twenty hours. For teens, we give prizes up to thirty hours.

Read at your reading level what ever you like such as adventure, mysteries, non-fiction, scary stories, etc.

If elementary students would like to practice reading with a college age or high school student, you can sign up for the Reading Buddy Program. And teens, if you would like to help a child read, you can sign up to be a mentor.

We have terrific programs headed our way that I will post about tomorrow.

Make a Splash @ Your Library!

Good Tuesday, young Pomonans! Tomorrow is your last day of school. Are you sad? Don't be! The Pomona Public Library is the place to be! Our theme this year is: Make a Splash @ Your Library for the children's program and Make Waves @ Your Library for our teens.

We will begin the Summer Reading Program next Tuesday, June 29, 2010. You can come into the library any time we are open to sign up. Then beginning the 7th of July we will have programs every Wednesday at 3:30pm. We have some great programs lined up including a Bubble program. What is that you say? Come and find out!!

We will give you reading logs that will help you keep track of the hours you have read. When you have finished five hours, have one of your parents sign it and return it to the library for prizes!! As you know from the past, we give out good prizes and everyone has a great time.

So don't miss out, come to the reading program! I'll be posting weekly the program for the next week so check back in often.

Juggling With Mr. Ed

Good Friday, young Pomonans! We had a great time with Mr. Ed yesterday. A lot of you caught on really fast. I don't know how many years in a row that I've taken Mr. Ed's class and I can only juggle scarves not the beanbags!

We started out with the feathers and many of you went right to the beanbags. Not me. Scarves are my speed!

Don't forget that the last day to turn in your reading hours is tomorrow 8/8/09 by 5:15pm. Our end of the reading program party is Wednesday 8/12/09 at 3:30pm. Buster Balloon will be here again and we can't wait!

Those of you who won "Reader of the Week" can take home your pictures and interviews at that time.

We had a really great summer and in some ways it's hard to see it end.

Our Fabulous Puppet Show With Swazzle

Hello young Pomonans! Oh my goodness, we had such a great time with Swazzle yesterday. I am sorry that the pictures are so dark but he did a light show!! We turned off the overhead lights and he used shadow puppets as well as puppets themselves lit up with lights. Our reading program theme is: "be creative @ your library" and Swazzle was very creative. It really was impressive! For those of you who were there, you know how incredible it was. In some of the better lighted pictures, you can see how kids were participating and getting totally obsorbed with this show. This whole summer we have had great programs and the response of the children was amazing. It is so great to be a part of Pomona!!

Today is the last day of our reading buddies. We have had 135 children read with 29 high school and college mentors! A mentor and a student would sit together in our story hour room and practice reading for 30 minutes. It is such a great program and is very rewarding to both student and mentor. We are so proud of our mentors (who volunteered their time) that we are having a pizza party for them today. Hooray for the Reading Buddies Program!!

Remember there is just one more week to be able to turn in your reading hours. The following week we will have our talent show and the week after that we have our end of the reading program party with Buster Balloon. If you were here last year you KNOW how incredible Buster is. He makes these intricate balloon figures and for the finale he blows up this huge "whoopie cushion" and gets INSIDE it!!

So come on in and experience the fun for yourselves. Thanks to all of you who have come in and made this reading program the best it can be. You are wonderful!!

Summer Reading Program Theme: Be Creative @ Your Library

Good Friday to you, young Pomonans. If you have been in the Library at all this week, you will see how busy we are! I posted last Wednesday's program but didn't have much time to talk about it.

Yes, we really did have a live alligator in the Library. Wild Wonders, Inc. is a group of people who go around to different libraries and schools to show children (and adults) these animals and where they come from.

My pictures aren't the greatest. (I guess I better keep my day job at the library!) I can't seem to hold my camera still. At least you can get an idea of the animals we had. The fox was so cute!

If you recall several years ago we had Wonders of Wildlife here and they had me eat a mealworm. I told the kids if you all read a book a day for the rest of your lives that I would eat it. Of course they all egged me on and I didn't feel like I could refuse so I just popped it in my mouth! I've always wondered how my co-workers managed to be out of the room at the right time! :)

Next Wednesday (July 15th) we have a Story teller named Georgette Baker. We have had her here at the library before and we have really enjoyed her. She tells stories and sings in both English and Spanish and she is very good! You don't want to miss this show.

Good afternoon, young Pomonans. I'm blogging from home today because the library is closed. It is so strange not to be going into work today. I have worked at our wonderful library for almost 19 years and the only time we have closed on Mondays was when there was a holiday. I guess I better get used to it!

The Summer Reading Program is going great. We are a little lower in numbers so far this year, so if you haven't signed up do so soon!

Last Wednesday my favorite children's entertainer opened our programing with his magic/comedy act. Yes, Abbit the Average was in wonderful form as he wowed us with his side splitting funny routine. I took pictures but I didn't have my camera on the right setting so they came out a little dark. I'll post them tomorrow.

This coming Wednesday, July 8th, we are having an animal show. Wonders of Wildlife will come and bring some animals that we don't usually see everyday. Animal programs are very popular so you don't want to miss this. The program will be from 3:30-4:30pm in our beautiful Laura Ingalls Wilder room.

Here is our schedule for this week;

Reading Buddies Begins Tuesday June 23, 2009

Hello young Pomonans! Yikes! The Summer Reading Program and the Reading Buddies are beginning next week! Here is information about the Reading Buddies Program in case you don't know what it is:

We pair up one elementary school student with one high school or college student so the elementary student can practice reading. They are paired up for thirty minutes. The high school or college student listens and encourages the elementary student while he/she reads.

This is one of the best things we do in the children's room. The older students enjoy helping the younger students to read and the younger students love the attention from the older students. It's a win - win program.

If you are a high school or college student in the Pomona area please come in and fill out an application. The program runs for six weeks on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 12:00pm to 4:00pm. You can stay one, two or the four hours depending on how much time you have to volunteer.

It you are an elementary student entering grades one through six, come in with a parent to sign up for this great program. Last year we had over one hundred kids participate!

So bring the summer on at the Pomona Public Library. We are ready!

Our Summer Reading Program officially begins June 22, 2009. Our theme is "Be Creative @ Your Library." The week of June 22, you can come in and sign up for the program. Get books on your reading level while you're here and you have one week to read five hours. Beginning the week of the 29th you have your Parents sign your reading log that you have read your five hours. Then come in and get your prizes!

It's that simple. You can come in any time the library is open to get books and claim your prizes.

We have special programs every Tuesday and Wednesday.

Tuesdays at 3:30pm we will have crafts.

Wednesdays at 3:30pm we will have entertainers come in. Here is our schedule for entertainers:

July 1st: Abbit the Average. Magician and humor combined!
July 8th: Wild Wonders Animal Show
July 15: Georgette Baker, Storyteller
July 22: Richard Wade: Amazing Science
July 29: Swazzle: Puppet show

That's right, young Pomonans, our Summer Reading Program is on its way. Toot your own horn! "Beat it" to the library! The possibilities are endless! We want all of you to be creative this year. We have wonderful programs and crafts this year and we are also going to have a talent show! Cool. Sign up at the Children's desk by the end of July.

Tomorrow is the last day you all can turn in reading hours. This summer has gone by sooooo fast! It's been our best year to date with our final numbers at 1,023. We haven't been through all of the cards yet, so that number could go up or down. I will post the final numbers next week.

Remember that our party this year will be Wednesday August 13th at 10:00am. We will be holding the party outside next to the county courthouse. Our magician is our friend Jeff Abbit known as Abbit the Average. He is a great entertainer and I know everyone will enjoy it.

We did it! 1,000 Readers

It was close! We were down to two days for reader sign-ups. We lost a whole day on Tuesday because of the earthquake. But we did it! As of 3:00pm friday August 1st, we have 1,004 readers.

This has been a fantastic summer. We have more readers and we have had more people come to our crafts and our shows. We have over 100 children reading for our reading buddies and 30 teens to listen to them read!

Next week we will have our crafts on Tuesday and our Reader's Theater performance will be Wednesday, both at 3:30pm.
