Good day, young Pomonans! The Summer Reading Program is coming soon! Our theme this year is "One World, Many Stories." Sign ups begin June 20, 2011 and the first day to turn in hours is June 27th.

Our Reading Buddies Program sign ups begin June 20th with the actual program beginning June 27th. This program is where we pair up an elementary student with a high school or college student to practice reading. This is a GREAT program because the younger children like the attention of the older students and the older students like to help the younger ones.

Stop in to the library for applications for the buddy program and for more detailed information about both programs.

Bubble Mania at PPL

Good Thursday, young Pomonans! We had a great time with Bubble Mania yesterday. She made all different sizes of bubbles plus, as you can see, some of you actually got inside one! It was really hot in the room and all of your were troopers to stick it out. Congratulations to all of our raffle winners, and to our two readers of the week: Sun Chow and Maria Castillo.

Next week and the following Wednesday programs will be outside under the shade trees. Remember to bring a blanket to sit on so you will be more confortable.

Every Monday and Tuesdays this month from 12:00pm-4:00pm will be our Reading Buddies. That has been going extremely well. Students and mentors: keep up the good work!

Summer Reading Program and Reading Buddies 2010

It's almost here, young Pomonans! These are pictures of our prizes for the Summer Reading Program this year. The top two pictures are prizes for the children and the bottom two are pictures of the prizes for teens. As usual we have great prizes! Come on in and see the display and then Tuesday come to sign up for the Reading Program and for the Reading Buddies Program. Our Children's Reading Program is for children ages 0-12 and teens ages 13-17. The children's theme is: Make a Splash @ your library and the teens theme is: Make Waves @ your library. So come in and sign up!

As you remember, we keep track of the hours you read. We give you a reading log that easily tracks your time. After reading five hours, bring it in and we give you some prizes. We give prizes out for five, ten, fifteen, and twenty hours. For teens, we give prizes up to thirty hours.

Read at your reading level what ever you like such as adventure, mysteries, non-fiction, scary stories, etc.

If elementary students would like to practice reading with a college age or high school student, you can sign up for the Reading Buddy Program. And teens, if you would like to help a child read, you can sign up to be a mentor.

We have terrific programs headed our way that I will post about tomorrow.

Reading Buddy Program to Begin June 29, 2010

Great news, young Pomonans! Our Reading Buddy program will begin in full swing June 29, 2010.

The "Practice Makes Perfect Reading Buddy Program" is a volunteer program with high school and college students helping elementary school students improve their reading skills. The reading mentors will work with readers on a one-to-one basis in half-hour (30 minute) sessions. Readers may have only 1 half-hour (30 minute) session per day. They may practice up to two days each week.

This program is not meant to take the place of Summer School or tutoring. Only readers who read on their own are eligible to participate in this program. Children entering first (1st) grade who are already reading will be eligible. Mentors will not teach children how to read. Reading times are Mondays and Tuesdays from 12:00pm to 4:00pm.

Due to the nature of volunteering, we cannot guarantee that mentors will always be available to read with children in Spanish.

Since our new hours will be Monday through Thursday 12:00-7:00pm, our Reading Buddy days will only be Monday and Tuesdays. Our Summer Reading performers day will be on Wednesdays from 3:30-4:30pm. We also will be open on Saturdays from 12:00-5:00pm so you can come in and turn in your reading hours. I will be explaining that program in a few days.

You must register with us for the Reading Buddy Program. Come in anytime now and fill out an application so you can be ready when we begin on June 29th.

This is really a GREAT program! Children get attention from older kids and the older kids get great pleasure in helping the young ones. If you need help picking out a book, Ms. Nissa and I will be more than happy to help you. (There are other books out there besides Wimpy Kid...) ;)

Our Current "Resident Teens"

Anais, Kelly and Vivian have been a great help with our Summer Reading Program this year. If it weren't for these girls we couldn't have functioned as well. They helped pass out prizes to our readers and also were part of our Reading Buddy's program. It's a lot of fun for me to have teens around! Let's here it for Anais, Kelly and Vivian! Hooray!!!

Reading Buddies Begins Tuesday June 23, 2009

Hello young Pomonans! Yikes! The Summer Reading Program and the Reading Buddies are beginning next week! Here is information about the Reading Buddies Program in case you don't know what it is:

We pair up one elementary school student with one high school or college student so the elementary student can practice reading. They are paired up for thirty minutes. The high school or college student listens and encourages the elementary student while he/she reads.

This is one of the best things we do in the children's room. The older students enjoy helping the younger students to read and the younger students love the attention from the older students. It's a win - win program.

If you are a high school or college student in the Pomona area please come in and fill out an application. The program runs for six weeks on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 12:00pm to 4:00pm. You can stay one, two or the four hours depending on how much time you have to volunteer.

It you are an elementary student entering grades one through six, come in with a parent to sign up for this great program. Last year we had over one hundred kids participate!

So bring the summer on at the Pomona Public Library. We are ready!

Tomorrow's Craft: Spiders!

This is a picture of our craft tomorrow. Isn't it cute? You know those small round spikey things that fall out of trees? Lucky for us Grandma Sue likes collecting them! We are using those for the body of the spider.

Pomona Public Library's Catch the Reading Bug Summer Reading Program

In just two short weeks, we will be kicking off the Summer Reading Program. "Catch the Reading Bug" is our theme this year so prepare yourself for a really buggy summer. You'll see staff in these green t-shirts and the lucky readers of the week will win a t-shirt plus other prizes.

Beginning June 23, 2008, we will be signing people up for the reading program. This program is for children ages 2 to 12. Our teen program is for teens 13-18. We will be counting hours instead of books again this year. It worked out really well last year. Keep track of the hours you read or are read to. Have one of your parents sign your reading log when you get up to five hours. Bring it in and get a prize! We will be giving prizes for five hours, ten hours, fifteen hours, & twenty hours. The teen program will go up to 25 hours.


The other program is called the Reading Buddy Program. This is a really great program where we put together an elementary school child with either a high school or college age student. You practice reading for a 30 minute session. Our sessions will be in the afternoon from 1:00-5:00pm. Come in anytime during that four hour period and have your 30 minute session. This is a really great program. The elementary kids love reading with the older ones and the older ones love being the "expert." The child must be able to read. This is not a tutoring session but a practice session. The elementary child must be going into 1st grade to participate in this program.

I'll be doing more posts about the prizes and the special programs we will be having this summer. Keep checking in!

The information fair is happening right now outside the library. There are plenty of people walking around from booth to booth. Kiwanis club is selling hot dogs and (gasp)they are letting Mr. Shapton cook! Charlene from the Cal Poly homework center is there telling everyone about our homework center. David Allen from the Daily Bulletin is supposed to be at our library table but he was off wandering around. Shoot, I was hoping for a picture for this blog!

Next week I will be posting about our Summer Reading Program. We have two programs one being the Reading Program and one being the Reading Buddy Program. I'll explain the difference between the two. We are also having again this year our Teen Program. There will be plenty to do this summer even though our hours will be shortened. Come in and find out!

Ahhhhhh!! Give students a break and they come back with a vengeance! We have been very busy Tuesday and Wednesday. I have a feeling reports are due and the last minute is at hand. We are here for you! Our homework center is here for you!

I know it seems like time is short and you can't possibly get everything done that you need to, but you can. You are also not by yourself, you have thousands of students going through what you are going through. What, that doesn't help? OK, then. Come on in and see for yourself. Let us help you get the best possible grades you can.

And, to give you that prize, we will begin the Summer Reading Program June 23rd. We will be giving away free books more than we ever have before.

Our reading buddies will begin that day as well. Reading buddies is where we pair an elementary student with a high school or college student to practice your reading. It is a wonderful program!
