Laura Ingalls Wilder Sociable Coming February 7, 2009

Good Thursday young Pomonans! The countdown to our Sociable is officially on! Forty three years ago the first Children's Librarian of the Pomona Public Library began a wonderful tradition in celebrating the birthday of Laura Ingalls Wilder. Her birthday was February 7,1867 and one hundred years later on February 5, 1967 the first sociable was celebrated here at the Pomona Public Library. Eight years later Melissa Sue Anderson, who played Mary in the television series of Little House on the Prairie, came to our sociable and signed autographs. We have a picture of her which I will post again soon.

This year Ken Frawley and Christy Lewis will tell cowboy stories and songs and will perform their trick roping. It will be great fun because we make it great fun! Your participation will make it even greater fun! How much fun is that? A lot!!

KEEP THIS DATE ON YOUR CALENDARS: FEBRUARY 7, 2009 FROM 1:00-4:00PM. We will have a big birthday cake, punch, and a craft. Grandma Sue will help you make a Conestoga wagon. I will also post that picture again.

Journeys to the Past helped us understand Native American culture with hands on artifacts. Several volunteers from the audience were needed.

This picture was taken at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Sociable on 2/2/08. I have been trying to upload more pictures but I find myself severely challenged. But there is hope. I have friends in high places, right Allan? More later.

A Successful Sociable!

A big thank you to all of you who came to our 42nd annual sociable. We had great fun! Craig Newton did a great job singing his way through the prairie. (We don't really know what "Twist and Shout" had to do with Laura, but we didn't care!) His knowledge of all of his instruments were impressive as was the fact that he played them so well.

Journeys to the Past recreated Native American history and had many artifacts for us to see. She showed us how Native Americans wove baskets and had beautiful ones on display. We all learned a lot and appreciated this added perspective.

Grandma Sue took over the conference room with her craft and I saw many children going home with a one room schoolhouse. The Friends of the Library provided refreshments and a good time was had by all.

This week we will have our children's valentine craft. It is Wednesday, February 6th at 3:00pm.
Next week will be our teen craft February 13th at 4:00pm.

One of our resident teens took pictures at the Sociable and we will post them when we are able. Since as of today no one has stopped by to help me with uploading pictures, I will leave that task to Ms. Nissa or Grandma Sue. :)

Joke for the day: Why did the one-eyed monster close down his school?
Answer: He only had one pupil.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Sociable

This morning I was cleaning out the display cases that house the Laura Ingalls Wilder mementos. I took a moment while I was dusting to really look at these treasures. They are what we have left of the past. We have dolls that are dressed in prairie attire, little models of the Ingalls family, and first edition copies of the Little House books that are actually signed by Laura. We even have twisted hay from South Dakota on display. Not to mention the original manuscript that Laura hand wrote "Little Town on the Prairie." What was the world like when Laura was alive?

Picture this: no electricity: this means no lights, televisions, computers and (horrors) no wii games.
No indoor plumbing: yes you had to go outside to get water to wash up, bathe and (horrors) use the outhouse. It took so much longer to do things. Laura's Ma assigned a task for every day:

"Wash on Monday,
Iron on Tuesday,
Mend on Wednesday,
Churn on Thursday,
Clean on Friday,
Bake on Saturday,
Rest on Sunday."

Come on over to the Pomona Public Library THIS Saturday at 1:00pm (do your baking in the morning) and enjoy music from the past. Craig Newton will perform "How the West was Sung" and Journeys to the Past will tell stories and re-enact the past before your very eyes! Then, for all you crafty people, we will have a great craft with Grandma Sue. (Read her post for more information.) It's always a lot of fun and, yes, there will be food.

You Are Cordially Invited to the 42nd Annual Laura Ingalls Wilder Sociable!

Pomona Public Library is having its 42nd Annual Laura Ingalls Wilder Sociable on Saturday, February 2, 2008, from 1:00PM to 4:00PM.!

You'll be able to listen to songs that were popular in Laura's Day, get a hands-on chance to learn and experience true pioneer life, and join Grandma Sue for a craft that your children can take home!

Dressing up is encouraged, but not required! (Although it is fun to dress up like Laura and pretend to be a pioneer in costume. ;) )

The event is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Pomona Public Library.
