Welcome to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Children's Room!

Ms. Clara Webber was the first children's librarian of Pomona Public Library. A long time correspondent with Mrs. Laura Ingalls Wilder, she was instrumental in having the Children's Room named in honor of Mrs. Wilder on May 25, 1950. Today, we house the original hand written manuscript for the novel Little Town on the Prairie. Every February, we host the Laura Ingalls Wilder Sociable in honor of Mrs. Wilder's February 7th birthday.

Memorial Day 2010

Good holiday, young Pomonans! This weekend is an important holiday for the United States. It must be because you all get out of school! Please take time this weekend to remember all of the fallen soldiers who gave their lives so that we can live in peace. A life is a high price to pay and we need to remember all that they have done for us.

My Mom's kid brother was a soldier in World War II. His name was Francis O. Moore and he was flying a plane over Germany and was shot down. I never met him but I was born on his birthday. I love that! He has always been special to me even though I never met him. Do any of you have family members who were killed in a war?

Remember them this weekend and for all the brave soldiers who never came home to their families.

Have a great weekend young Pomonans!

Homework help

Hello young Pomonans! As our Homework Help Center comes to a close I'm afraid I don't have very good news for you.

Yesterday Daniel, who is our Homework Help Center coordinator, told us there is no more funding for this program.

Daniel brought this letter with him and posted it for all to see. Here is the letter:

Dear Community Members:

We regret to inform you that the Pomona Homework Help Center at the Pomona Public Library will be closed after June 3, 2010. The Center for Community-Service-Learning at Cal Poly Pomona has sponsored the Homework Help Center through an AmeriCorps Grant since 2007. Unfortunately, this coming year we were not funded due to the difficult budget cuts effecting Cal Poly Pomona. Our Center will not have the funds and staff to support the Homework Help Center next year. It has been a pleasure working with the staff at the Pomona Public Library and the children who have participated in our many activities.

Regrettably,

Dr. Gibert Cadena
Interim Director

Daniel James Zeleznik
AmeriCorps Promise Fellow
Coordinator, Pomona Homework Help Center

It is a sad day indeed.

I don't have the heart for a joke of the day. :(

Arnie the Armadillo!

Good Tuesday, young Pomonans! I'd like for you all to meet Arnie, my new Armadillo puppet! He is soooo much fun. When he gets afraid of children, he pulls himself into his shell like a turtle. Very very cool!

My good friend Pride in Garfield Park and her baby brought Arnie to me today and I have been having a blast with him! (One of my co-workers saw Arnie inside his shell and she thought he was a roly poly bug! Not!

Joke of the day: Why did the armadillo refuse to take a gun?
Answer: Because you can't arm a dillo! ;)

Support Our Police!

Good Tuesday, young Pomonans! My friend Ren brought over this cool police car in support of our Pomona Police Department. I have it in a locked display case because I'm afraid it might walk off somehow. Ren makes these great "scrappy toys" that you all should check out at imagesofpomonabyren.blogspot.com. I'm sorry to say I don't know how to do links or I would link it for you. This car is actually a wind toy that will turn around in the wind! How cool is that?

We all want to show the Pomona Police that we support them. Next time you see a Pomona Police officer tell them "great job" or "well done." And thanks again to Ren.

Here are our activities for the week:

Tuesday: 11:45am Preschool story time
3:30-6:30pm Homework help center

Wednesday: 3:30-4:30pm Grandparents and books with Grandma Jean
3:30-6:30pm Homework help center

Thursday: 11:45am Infant story time
3:30-6:30pm Homework help center

See you here at the PPL! Come in and see this great police car!

Joke of the day: Why did the cowboy die with his boots on?
Answer: Because he didn't want to stub his toe when he kicked the bucket! ;)

Of course it is! Hopefully I will be adding library events as they become available to me.

Check here often!

Joke of the day: What did one computer keyboard say to the other computer keyboard?
Answer: Sorry, you're not my type! ;)

Book of the Week: "Chickens May Not Cross the Road and Other Crazy (But True) Laws"

Good Wednesday, young Pomonans! Our book of the week is a fun one. It is a non-fiction book (which means it is true). It is about different laws in our country that may seem a little odd. These laws are either in effect now or they were in effect in the past.

Linz, Kathi. "Chickens May Not Cross the Road and Other Crazy (But True) Laws."
Boston, MA: Houghton Mifflin Co., 2002.

Check these out:

From Paulding, Ohio: "Policemen are allowed to bite a dog if they think it will calm the dog down." (What???)

Baltimore, Maryland: "No one may take a lion to a movie theater." (I bet the Fox Theater is happy about that!)

International Falls, Minnesota: "Cats may not chase dogs up telephone poles." ( Okay....)

Santa Ana, California: "You many not swim on dry land." (No problem....)

Connecticut State Law: "A pickle is not to be sold unless it bounces." (Who's going to test them all out???)

Memphis, Tennessee: "No one may drive while asleep." (I'm glad to hear that...)

And of course: Quitman, Georgia: "Chickens may not cross the road."

Come in and check this book out. It really is hilarious and the illustrations make it even more outrageous!

The call number is:

LIN

We have two copies.

See you here at the PPL!!

Joke of the day: Why did the turtle cross the road?
Answer: To get to the shell station! ;)
