Welcome to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Children's Room!

Ms. Clara Webber was the first children's librarian of Pomona Public Library. A long time correspondent with Mrs. Laura Ingalls Wilder, she was instrumental in having the Children's Room named in honor of Mrs. Wilder on May 25, 1950. Today, we house the original hand written manuscript for the novel Little Town on the Prairie. Every February, we host the Laura Ingalls Wilder Sociable in honor of Mrs. Wilder's February 7th birthday.

Homework Assistance Center Halloween Party

Wow! Did we ever have a party yesterday afternoon. Our Homework Assistance Center went all out to have a great party for everyone. Daniel, our Americorps Promise Fellow from Cal Poly Pomona, did an outstanding job putting this together. The Homework Center worked with kids on their homework from 4-5pm and then had this great party out on the patio from 5-6pm. A GREAT time was had by all. The volunteers who worked with Daniel worked hard at setting up, blowing up balloons, decorating, etc.

Daniel is really good at encouraging businesses to donate what they can to the center and he had some really great decorations that were donated from the community. He found these two big awesome pinatas that were full to the brim. One child was hitting the pinata so hard that the rest of us gave him plenty of space!

The party was a huge success and the credit goes to Daniel and his volunteers. We at the library are so lucky to have such talented students volunteer their time here. College students are busy anyway and to have them give us so much of their time is really great.

If you have not been to our Homework Assistance Center yet, please come in and experience it for yourselves. You'll meet some great college students and get your homework done at the same time.

Our Homework Assistance Center hours are: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 4:00-6:00pm. See you here!

Joke of the day: What do witches use in their hair?
Answer: Scare-spray. ;)

Come Learn About Laura Ingalls Wilder and Pioneer Life!

Attention young Pomonans! As you know, our Children's Room is named after Laura Ingalls Wilder who wrote children's books about her childhood growing up in the mid to late 1800's. She traveled by wagon train, met indians, and lived the life of a pioneer.

This coming Tuesday, October 27th we are going to learn more about pioneer life and we will be making these paper dolls of a pioneer family. The time will be 4:00pm here in the Laura Ingalls Wilder Room.

We celebrate Laura's birthday every February with a Laura Ingalls Wilder Sociable. It is always the first Saturday of February from 1:00-3:00pm. This next year our event will take place on February 6th. Save the date.

In October, November and December we will have a special pioneer program to get us ready for the Sociable. In preperation, please read the "Little House Books", if you haven't already done so. The first book in the series is "Little House In the Big Woods."

See you here!

Joke of the day: Why did the tree travel to his hometown?
Answer: He was searching for his roots. ;)

Dog Sledding in 96 Degree Weather a Success at PPL

Hello young Pomonans! As you can see we had a great time with Adventure Quest Institute as they presented a program on dog sledding. Yes, it really was 96 degrees here in Pomona but we didn't even think of the heat as we listened to the program.

The little person that is dressed in the parka and boots is really a Pomona resident. The over sized clothing makes her look like a space person or something! She is showing some of the things that sledders have to wear to keep warm on the snow. You can see that the face is totally covered except for the eyes.

Mayor Rothman and his son Jason came to get in all of the fun. A good time was had by all and we even learned things in the process. That's how I like to learn!

We also had bingo playing in the conference room. It was well attended and many received prizes.

If you still haven't read our Big Read book, "The Call of the Wild" by Jack London, please come in to the library to check one out.

Joke of the day: Where do dogs buy their furniture?
Answer: At flea markets. ;)

This program begins the Pomona Big Read Program. All Pomonans (including young Pomonans) are to read the book, "Call of the Wild", by Jack London. This book is about a dog and we thought this would be the perfect way to include you in our big read.

Mark the time at 1:00pm-3:00pm in the children's room for this great opportunity. How often do you see a dog in the Library?

Joke of the day: What do you give to a dog to make him laugh?
