Welcome to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Children's Room!

Ms. Clara Webber was the first children's librarian of Pomona Public Library. A long time correspondent with Mrs. Laura Ingalls Wilder, she was instrumental in having the Children's Room named in honor of Mrs. Wilder on May 25, 1950. Today, we house the original hand written manuscript for the novel Little Town on the Prairie. Every February, we host the Laura Ingalls Wilder Sociable in honor of Mrs. Wilder's February 7th birthday.

Library Hours Are Changing!

Hey, young Pomonans! The library's hours are changing. Mark your calendars! Beginning the 7th of July our hours are as follows:

Sunday-Monday: Closed
Tuesday-Thursday: 10:00am-6:00pm
Friday-Saturday: 11:30am-5:30pm

The good news for our story hour crowd is that story time moves back to Tuesdays at 10:15am. It has been hard to have story time at 12:15pm because of naps and lunches but you all have been very loyal and I appreciate that.

The important thing to remember is that we are not open after 6:00pm. The hours will change again in September but we will worry about that when the time comes.

Happy Summer! We will see you here!

Joke of the day: What do you get when you cross a snake and a kangaroo?
Answer: A jump rope!

Reading Buddies Begins Tuesday June 23, 2009

Hello young Pomonans! Yikes! The Summer Reading Program and the Reading Buddies are beginning next week! Here is information about the Reading Buddies Program in case you don't know what it is:

We pair up one elementary school student with one high school or college student so the elementary student can practice reading. They are paired up for thirty minutes. The high school or college student listens and encourages the elementary student while he/she reads.

This is one of the best things we do in the children's room. The older students enjoy helping the younger students to read and the younger students love the attention from the older students. It's a win - win program.

If you are a high school or college student in the Pomona area please come in and fill out an application. The program runs for six weeks on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 12:00pm to 4:00pm. You can stay one, two or the four hours depending on how much time you have to volunteer.

It you are an elementary student entering grades one through six, come in with a parent to sign up for this great program. Last year we had over one hundred kids participate!

So bring the summer on at the Pomona Public Library. We are ready!

Joke of the day: Why are baby goats fun to play with?
Answer: They're always kidding around! :)

Good monday young Pomonans. I got back from my trip this weekend. The library you are seeing is the Glendale Arizona Public Library. My cousins live in Glendale and I had a good visit with them and I went to the local library. In two of these pictures you can see in the distance a statue. I looked closer but I didn't take a picture. I wish I did because it was in honor of the "irrigators", those people who were responsible for bringing water into the area. Glendale, Arizona is built on the desert and if people hadn't brought in water there would be no town.

The other place I visited was the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona. This is a beautiful museum that houses Native American artifacts and art. It was founded in 1929 by Dwight B. and Maie Bartlett Heard to house their personal collection. It really is a magnificent collection of art of the Southwest. Many tribes are represented. They also have a gift shop that sells local artist's work. I especially love the Native American storytellers but even the small ones were too expensive for me! If you ever get to the Phoenix area, the Heard Museum is worth a visit.

Joke of the day: Why was the calendar so sad?
Answer: Its days were numbered. :)

Be Creative @ Your Library

That's right, young Pomonans, our Summer Reading Program is on its way. Toot your own horn! "Beat it" to the library! The possibilities are endless! We want all of you to be creative this year. We have wonderful programs and crafts this year and we are also going to have a talent show! Cool. Sign up at the Children's desk by the end of July.

There is so much going on this summer and I will start next week by doing a series of posts. You are going to love this summer!

Our Summer Reading Program begins June 22, 2009 for sign ups. Read your first five hours and we will begin to hand out prizes the week of June 29th.

I will be going out of town for the rest of the week but I hope to stop at the local public library and update the blog.

How exciting that summer is coming!!!

Joke of the day: What's the most important meal of the day for a car?
Answer: Brake-fast. :)
