Welcome to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Children's Room!

Ms. Clara Webber was the first children's librarian of Pomona Public Library. A long time correspondent with Mrs. Laura Ingalls Wilder, she was instrumental in having the Children's Room named in honor of Mrs. Wilder on May 25, 1950. Today, we house the original hand written manuscript for the novel Little Town on the Prairie. Every February, we host the Laura Ingalls Wilder Sociable in honor of Mrs. Wilder's February 7th birthday.

Kids: Pizza Party - Celebrate Homework Support Center

Good Thursday, young Pomonans! Our homework center had two days of wonderful parties honoring the end of school and honoring our wonderful volunteers who help our kids.

I would love to take pictures of these events but I didn't see parents to ask their permission. Our highest priority is the safety of our children and every parent has the right not to give permission for their child's picture to be on the internet.

But know that a "good time was had by all." We had pizza, games awards, and a whole lot of fun. A big thank you goes to Heather Morgan, an Americorps fellow from the Center for Community Service-Learning at Cal Poly Pomona.

Joke of the day: What do ducks serve at parties?
Answers: Quackers and cheese! :)

Homework Center End of the Year Party

Can you believe it's almost the end of the school year? I can't even believe it is almost June. This is the last week that our Homework Help Center will be open. I know this center has helped many of you with your homework so come on in and go to the party and thank our Cal Poly Pomona students and have some food while you're at it! Rumor has it that Cal Poly Pomona's Billy Bronco will be there! Hooray, a real celebrity in our story hour room!

You might not know that our Cal Poly Pomona students volunteer their time to help you. They don't get paid. This is a great opportunity to thank them for their help.

The party dates are: May 27 & 28 from 4:00-6:00pm. May 28th will be the main party. See you here!

Joke of the day: How come fish get so much mail?
Answer: Someone is always dropping them a line. :)

Happy Memorial Day

To our young Pomonans,

Have a great and safe holiday weekend. Remember our country while you are off of school this weekend and of those who gave their lives so that we can be safe.

Our freedom is precious because it came at a price.

Remember to honor all our military men and women who serve our country.

More of the Goddess

This sign that is in the case with the Goddess is from the newspaper "Pomona Times." It tells the history of the Goddess. If you try you can barely read it. If you can't make it out, come on down and look at it! Also you can click on the image and read it that way.

That's it! It's been very busy around here lately. That means you all have deadlines coming up. Don't panic! We are here for you.

Joke of the day: When are teachers awesome?
Answer: When they have a lot of class. :)

Goddess of Pomona

Good Tuesday young Pomonans! Today I thought I would bring the Goddess of Pomona to your attention. We have housed the Goddess here at the library from 1889 to the present which is 120 years! This Goddess is an imitation of a goddess made it Italy. The original can be found in Ufizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. It cost $917.40 to ship it from Italy. Today that would be about $20,000.00!

The Goddess statue is placed on a marble base, which sits on top of a block of granite. It has been estimated that the statue and base together weigh between 600-700 pounds. Since first coming to Pomona in 1889, the statue has been "bathed" - cleaned - just three times. In 1965, 1982, and 1987. It was placed in its glassed case in 1989.

I took a picture of the Goddess' feet on purpose. You may not be able to tell from the picture but her feet are two different sizes and she has on two different sandals. It you can't see it clearly come on in and see it for yourself!

We are proud to house the Goddess for the City of Pomona. She stands tall and proud and watches over us all in the beautiful City of Pomona.

Joke of the day: Why should you tiptoe past the medicine cabinet?
Answer: So you won't wake the sleeping pills. :)
